'Believe Me': Review of its Smartness and Wit
The comedy-drama movie "Believe Me" is being categorized by many as a smart satirical film that embodies the dilemma among many Christians. Some perceived the film as more of a religious movie because the plot of the film centers on the character of Sam (played by Alex Russell).
In a movie review by Hollywood Reporter, it was mentioned that law school student Sam and his group of friends - Tyler (played by Singqua Walls), Baker (Max Adler), and Pierce (Miles Fisher) - conducted a money-raising scam. They pretended to raise funds for drinkable water in Africa and even dubbed their charity work as Get Wells Soon. In truth, however, there is really no charity because the group just raised funds to pay for the school tuition of Sam because his scholarship has just expired.
What makes the movie exciting is that, as the plot transcends, ironic realizations by the characters are being unraveled. It seems that their fund-raising efforts were recognized by the Christian organization Cross Country. Its leader (Christopher McDonald) encouraged the group of friends to join Cross Country for a nationwide tour for fundraising. Somehow, Sam and his friends were able to pull off the event successfully and called themselves as the God Squad. Also, Sam got attracted by Cross Country manager Callie (Johanna Braddy). As Sam fell in love with Callie, he was caught in between conscience and his deadly plans of the true reason why the Get Wells Soon was even created.
The Relevant Magazine said that the "Believe Me" is actually not a Christian movie but it is a film about Christians. It added that "Believe Me" is a good movie with an excellent script. The smartness and maturity of the story is being conveyed to the audience in a comedic way. Because of this, critics viewed the film as something that was brilliantly crafted.
Directed by Will Bakke, "Believe Me" is a charming movie. The New York Times applauded on the humor and smartness of the film. It also recognized the creative efforts of Will Bakke. The brilliant director admitted that he was raised Christian by his parents. He emphasized that the movie "Believe Me" depicts the religious frauds that are happening nowadays without mocking the victim's misfortunes brought by these frauds.
