'Ouija' Star Olivia Cooke: Bates Motel' Made Me Better Actress, 'I'll Cry At Toilet Paper'
Known for her role in the A&E horror TV show "Bates Motel," Olivia Cooke is starring in her third horror film titled "Ouija."
Written by Juliet Snowden and its director Stiles White, "Ouija" features Cooke as Laine, a teenager who seeks help from a Ouija board to solve her best friend's mysterious death and gets caught up in the sinister process.
It will hit theaters at 8 p.m. on Oct. 24, Friday, a week before Halloween, in more than 2,000 theaters in the United States, according to Deadline.
Produced by Ouija board game maker Hasbro Inc. and co-produced and distributed by Comcast Corp's Universal Pictures, "Ouija" is expected to follow the footsteps of Brad Pitt's "Fury" and Ben Affleck's "Gone Girl."
Drawn to strong female characters, Cooke said, "I don't think I have taken horror to rise up the ranks of Hollywood, but I know people do, when I think of girls trying to rise up the ranks with horror, I always think of the hot naked girl that gets slashed first."
Playing a teen cystic fibrosis sufferer named Emma in "Bates Motel," the 20-year-old British actress said starring in horror films and in a horror TV show helped her manage her emotions more effectively when acting, Reuters has learned.
In a scene she recently did on "Bates Motel" where she just cried, Cooke said, "The director was able to tap into something where my emotions just came flooding out. My emotions are very readily available, which is weird."
"I've never had that, but that means I can cry at anything now. I'll cry at toilet paper," she added.
For Cooke, "Bates Motel" is "quite psychological" and she just get to challenge herself and stretch her emotions. She said her character Emma is "very light" and not necessarily "a psychotic or evil character."
"Ouija" also stars Ana Coto, Daren Kagasoff, Bianca Santos, Douglas Smith, Shelley Hennig, Sierra Heuermann, Sunny May Allison, Lin Shaye, Claudia Katz, Vivis Colombetti, Robyn Lively, Matthew Settle, Afra Sophia Tully and Claire Beale among others.
Before "Ouija," Cooke played a demon-possessed, disturbed young woman in "The Quiet Ones" and an abductee in the sci-fi horror "The Signal."
