Amazon Fire Phone Release Date 2014, Price, Specs & More
Amazon officially announced the Amazon Fire phone on Wednesday at a press conference in Seattle, Washington. The new smartphone has been in development for years and many prototypes and changes bounced around since 2012. Amazon said this is the first of several planned own-brand smartphones. The phone features a customized version of Android similar to the operating system on a Amazon's Kindle Fire and apps will be made available through their own Amazon Appstore.
The new Amazon Fire Phone will start out at $199.99 on contract with 32GB of storage, and a 64GB version will be available for $299.99. Off contract, the phone will be priced similar with the iPhone, starting at $650. The phone includes 12 months of Amazon Prime service for free with every purchase.
The Fire Phone will be available exclusively from AT&T in the U.S., launching on July 25th. You can pre-order now at AT&T's site and Amazon's website.
The key difference between the Amazon Fire phone and other competition is a unique combination of sensors and four front-facing cameras that track the user's head in order to facilitate a variety of 3D effects and gesture controls. These movements by the user will make pictures and other on-screen elements shift their position as the user's head moves, building a more 3D experience. The user can also tilt the phone to scroll, launch menus and display new information.
The Fire will have a quad-core 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 4.7-inch 720p HD display, 2GB of RAM, dual stereo speakers, a 13-megapixel rear camera and front-facing camera for video chatting. Unlimited cloud-based photo storage is also a hopeful selling point.
The phone will include six individual cameras, the most for any smartphone to date. Four of the camera modules are low-power units that will track the user's head for 3D effects enhancement and motion gestures. There will be strong integration with Amazon's various Prime services, including its video service and the newly unveiled Amazon Music offering along with Kindle software for eBooks.
Also available is their Mayday service, providing direct communication to Amazon's customer support team via video chat. Another key feature is Firefly, which uses the camera to scan barcodes on products and pull them up in Amazon's store. Firefly can also listen to music or TV shows and recognize phone numbers and email addresses as well. The new phone will have a dedicated Firefly button that pulls the feature up in one second, according to Amazon.
