‘AMAZING GRACE’ Musical Returns to Museum of the Bible
The Broadway musical AMAZING GRACE, which launched its successful national tour last year with an eight-week run at The Museum of the Bible, will return with its inspirational message as the Museum's newest installation in its Pure Flix World Stages. It will begin performances on March 16 and run through August 18, 2019. Written by Christopher Smith and Arthur Giron with direction by Gabriel Barre and choreography/fight direction by J. Clayton Winters, this production will be an updated 90 minute, one-act version created specifically for the Museum of the Bible.
AMAZING GRACE is an "unforgettable musical saga" depicting the conversion of John Newton the composer of the song "Amazing Grace" from a career as a brutal slave trader to a committed reformer, abolitionist, and Christian who would ultimately pen the "hymn of hymns."
John Newton, a willful and musically talented young Englishman, faces a future as uncertain as the turning tide. Coming of age as Britain sits atop an international empire of slavery, he finds himself torn between following in the footsteps of his father-a slave trader-or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart. Accompanied by his slave, Thomas, John embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas. When that journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning inspires a blazing anthem of hope that will finally guide him home. Brimming with emotion and adventure, AMAZING GRACE is an unforgettable musical saga that captures the spirit of history's sweetest and most powerful sound: freedom.
"We are extremely excited to present this new 90-minute version of the Broadway musical, Amazing Grace at the theatre at the Museum of the Bible for a long run. The show will feature a tight ensemble cast of 15 people and an even more theatrical approach to the story telling, while still using and taking advantage of elements from our visually stunning Broadway production. We look forward to bringing this epic-adventure-true love story of redemption and forgiveness to Washington DC audiences again and look forward to becoming a mainstay at the museum itself."
-AMAZING GRACE Director, Gabriel Barre
"I am thrilled we are able to return to The Museum of the Bible. The audiences we were blessed to have during our initial run were a fantastic way to kick off a national tour and I am excited to return for an extended run. Audiences will enjoy our new 90 minute, one-act show format designed specifically for this theater run."
