'A.D.: Beyond the Bible' NBC Premiering 2015, Producer Mark Burnett Says 'Could be Biggest Series in Years'
"The Bible" series on The History Channel was a huge success when it aired in a 5-part series in Spring 2013. The series became the highest rated series of the year beating out shows like "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones," and attracting more than 10 million viewers per episode on average.
"The Bible" producer Mark Burnett ("Shark Tank", "The Apprentice", "The Voice") then used footage from "The Bible" miniseries and made the feature-length film called Son of God which released to theaters in February 2014 grossed $60 million in the U.S.
Now, Burnett and his wife Roma Downey ("Touched by an Angel") are working on their next project titled "A.D.: Beyond the Bible." This series will air in prime time on NBC, premiering on Easter Sunday 2015. Burnett said it "could become NBC's biggest series in many, many years."
"Beyond the Bible" begins after the resurrection of Christ, and follows the lives of King Herod's family, Roman politicians, temple priests, and the disciples. Burnett said the storylines are powerful. These disciples, after Jesus dies and resurrects, the Holy Spirit comes upon them and there is only one way for them-that's spreading the good news of Jesus," he told Forbes Magazine.
NBC's president of late-night and alternative programming, Paul Telegdy, spoke about the popularity of the upcoming series. "There are not a lot of books being read these days," he told Forbes. "But there is one that's being read and reread, and that's the Bible."
"A.D.: Beyond the Bible" will begin filming in September 2014.
