Ginny Owens Talks About How the Attack on the Capitol Inspired Her New Song

Ginny Owens has just released her new single "Sing in the Darkness." The song is the lead single off Owens' forthcoming worship EP, Sing Hope in the Darkness. The song was written by Owens, Leslie Jordan (All Sons & Daughters) and her producer, Tyrus Morgan (Unspoken, We Are Messengers). Her initial inspiration for the song was to craft a church anthem summarizing the theme of her upcoming book: Singing in the Dark: Finding Hope in the Songs of Scripture.
However, the words took on new meaning as Owens heard about the attack on the capitol when a mob of protestors launched a violent attack against the US Congress on January 6, 2021. The Capitol complex was locked down and lawmakers and staff were evacuated while rioters occupied and vandalized the building for several hours. More than 140 people were injured in the storming, and five died during or shortly after it.
Owens explains: "As the riots were taking place at the Capitol, we were finishing the song. As we watched in shock and awe, with hearts breaking, the words we were writing - words declaring that God's light, love and hope are with us, even in our darkest hours -were not just theoretical, but becoming more true with every moment. Singing that God's light is our only hope in darkness helps drill that message into my soul."
Owens has just released a lyric video to the song, you can watch it here.
