Brian Courtney Wilson Celebrates Juneteenth with "Be Real Black for Me"
In celebration of Juneteenth, Dove Award winner and Grammy Award nominee Brian Courtney Wilson has teamed up with Ledisi to record "Be Real Black for Me." The song was written by Charles Mann, Donny Hathaway, Roberta Flack and it was first recorded by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack back in 1972.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to share this reimagining of a song I have loved since I first heard Donny and Roberta's recording of it years ago," Wilson announced. "Thank you for riding with us me on it @ledisi."
"Be Real Black for Me" was taken from Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack 's platinum selling self-titled 1972 album. The album featured their version of "You've Got a Friend" recorded before the single release of the James Taylor version. Both tracks debuted on the Hot 100 almost simultaneously - Taylor version debuted on June 5, 1971, whereas Flack/Hathaway version debuted the following week (June 12, 1971). Though Taylor's version reached #1, the Flack/Hathaway duet ascended as high as #29 and was a top ten R&B hit at #8.
Though "Be Real Black for Me" was never released as a single, it has become an influential song. Later, Jeramine Dupree, a multi-platinum music producer (Kendrick Lamar, T.I. Trey Songz, and more), had sampled the song as a way to fight against racism.
