Here Are Lyrics to Chris Tomlin's "The First Hymn (feat. Ben Fielding)"

Chris Tomlin and Ben Fielding have released a remarkable new single titled "The First Hymn", unveiled on April 11, 2025. This piece is a modern adaptation of the Oxyrhynchus hymn, the earliest known Christian hymn containing both lyrics and musical notation, dating back to the 3rd century AD. Discovered in 1918 in Oxyrhynchus, Egypt, this ancient hymn was found on a papyrus fragment known as P.Oxy 1786 .
The Oxyrhynchus hymn, from which "The First Hymn" draws its lyrics, is a significant artifact in Christian history. Written in Greek, the hymn poetically calls for cosmic silence to honor the Holy Trinity-a motif prevalent in ancient Greek hymnody . The original musical notation is entirely diatonic, employing the Hypolydian mode, and is set largely syllabically with a few short melismas.
In this modern rendition, Tomlin and Fielding have preserved the hymn's ancient essence while infusing it with contemporary worship elements. The arrangement maintains a reverent tone, with ambient instrumentation and harmonious vocals that echo the solemnity of the original piece. The song's structure allows congregations to connect deeply with the early church's expressions of faith.

VERSE
Let all be silent
The shining stars not sound
Rushing rivers still
Let the mountains bow down
In awe and wonder
In reverence we come
Who is worthy of all worship?
Who is seated on the throne?
CHORUS
All powers cry out in answer?
All glory and praise forever
To our God
The Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Amen, we sing, amen
BRIDGE
To the only Giver of all good gifts
Amen
To the only One who forgives our sins
Amen
To the only God to the Risen King
To the One who died and rose again
Amen
We sing amen
