Smokey Robinson and Wife Frances File $500 Million Countersuit Alleging Defamation and Elder Abuse

Music icon Smokey Robinson and his wife Frances Robinson have filed a $500 million countersuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against four former employees who recently accused the Motown legend of sexual assault. The Robinsons are alleging defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and financial elder abuse in response to what they describe as a malicious and baseless campaign to damage their reputation and extort money.
The countersuit follows a May 6 civil lawsuit in which the plaintiffs-identified as Jane Does 1 through 4-accused Robinson of sexual misconduct spanning from 2007 to 2024. In their response, the Robinsons assert that these allegations are completely false and were preceded by an attempted $100 million extortion scheme by the accusers.
"These outrageous claims are nothing more than a calculated effort to tarnish Mr. Robinson's legacy and exploit his public standing for financial gain," said Robinson's attorney in a statement. "We intend to fight these defamatory accusations with every legal remedy available."
The Robinsons' legal filing cites specific public statements made by the accusers during a May 6 press conference as knowingly false and harmful. The couple also alleges that the accusers' actions amount to financial elder abuse under California law, given Mr. Robinson's age-he is currently 85.
The original suit against Robinson seeks $50 million in damages and alleges repeated instances of sexual assault that the plaintiffs claim occurred in private areas of the Robinson residence. Frances Robinson is also named in that lawsuit, accused of enabling an unsafe work environment.
In response, the Robinsons have categorically denied all accusations, labeling the lawsuit a "fabrication." The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has reportedly opened a preliminary investigation into the claims, though no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
Robinson has recently released his latest Gospel studio album, What The World Needs Now, available today via Gaither Music Group. This 10-track collection marks a return to inspirational themes, blending gospel, soul, pop, reggae, and R&B to deliver messages of hope, unity, and love.
Produced by Warryn Campbell-renowned for his work with Mary Mary, Kanye West, and Stevie Wonder-the album features Robinson's signature smooth vocals on timeless classics and original compositions. Notable tracks include heartfelt renditions of Lean on Me, What a Wonderful World, and You've Got a Friend, alongside new originals like Be Kind to the Growing Mind (featuring The Temptations) and Food For Thought .
