Skillet’s John Cooper Calls for Clear Condemnation in Wake of Allegations Against Michael Tait

Skillet frontman John Cooper is calling on the Christian music industry to issue a "full-throated condemnation" of Michael Tait after multiple men came forward accusing the former Newsboys and DC Talk singer of serious sexual misconduct, including drugging and sexual assault.
Tait, a prominent figure in Christian music for decades, is alleged to have sexually assaulted several men in incidents dating back years. Some of the claims include being drugged before experiencing unwanted physical contact. The allegations, which have surfaced through social media and firsthand testimonies, have sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny over how the Christian music world handles abuse within its ranks.
On his Cooper Stuff podcast, Cooper spoke with urgency and sorrow, warning that silence or vague public relations statements in the face of such grave accusations would only further harm victims and discredit the Gospel.
"This is not a time for the Church or the Christian music industry to stay quiet, minimize, or spin this for damage control," Cooper said. "What's at stake is far greater than reputations-it's the trust of victims, the integrity of our witness, and the justice God demands."
Cooper emphasized that showing grace should never come at the expense of truth or accountability. He called on Christian leaders to prioritize survivors, acknowledge systemic failures, and confront abuse honestly rather than hiding behind spiritual language.
"If we don't condemn this clearly and seek justice for the wounded, we become complicit," he added. "We must do better-not just in response to this case, but in addressing the broader culture that has allowed abuse to be ignored for too long."
Cooper's remarks have struck a chord with many in the faith community who say they are tired of cycles of abuse and cover-up. As the allegations against Tait continue to be investigated, Cooper's call adds to the growing demand for reform, transparency, and survivor-centered action within the Christian music world.
