'Guardians of the Galaxy' Marvel Movie Claims Title of Top-Grossing Movie of 2014
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the most highly anticipated American superhero films of 2014 and the movie lived up to the hype. The action movie became the highest grossing film of 2014 after four weeks at the box office bringing in $262.1 million to top previous best of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Weekend Box Office Totals:
1. Guardians of the Galaxy - $3.8 million ($262.1 million domestic total)
2. As Above, So Below - $3.2 million (new)
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - $2.7 million ($153.3 million domestic total)
4. If I Stay - $2.3 million ($23.2 million domestic total)
5. The November Man - $2.2 million ($3.9 million since Wednesday release)
The film is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The highly anticipated summer movie released on August 1, 2014 to IMAX and 3-D.
Plot summary: In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. In order to evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a group of misfits including Gamora, Rocket, Drax the Destroyer and Groot. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy's fate in the balance.
Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker and Karen Gillan. The film is written and directed by James Gunn and produced by Kevin Feige. It is intended to be the tenth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Filming began in July 2013 at Shepperton Studios, England with filming continuing in London before wrapping up in October 2013.
