'Jane the Virgin' Pilot Episode Review, Recap: Gina Rodriguez is Perfect for the Lead Role [Watch]
CW has transformed a typical Monday night into an extremely likeable day with the premiere of "Jane the Virgin". The show kicked off with a promising start with good ratings considering the competition.
The character Jane Villanueva was played with relatable charm and warmth by "The Bold and the Beautiful" actress Gina Rodriguez. Jane was raised by Xiomara- her single yet lovely mother, and Alba- her grandmother. Both characters were instrumental in how she's become a responsible young adult. As a child, her mother and grandmother would crush a flower just to be able to demonstrate the result of not protecting her virtue.
Jane is still a virgin at the age of 23 with a patient boyfriend in the name of Michael- a detective, who's about to propose. The show's heroine protested, saying that it is still too soon to get engaged.
Rafael is another important character. This trapped husband owns the hotel where Jane is currently working. She immediately recognized him while Rafael is on his way to approach her, hilariously swinging the tail of her mermaid costume. Rafael is married to Petra, a character played by Yael Grobglas. Though Petra stood beside Rafael during his cancer battle, she had other intention of keeping her husband while having a sinful affair with her husband's friend.
The twisted plot began when Petra visited a hospital to undergo artificial insemination using her husband's sperm. Jane is in the same hospital for a pap smear but ends up getting inseminated by Rafael's sister Louisa, who appears to be not in the right frame of mind at the time. It may have something to do with her catching Petra in bed with another man.
Although the story's premise is a little hard to digest for many people, the outcome is an entertaining show that has successfully balanced emotions and humor. Rodriguez is just perfect for the character, especially in the scene where she flops her mermaid costume in the pool.
Luckily, the pilot has a convenient voice-over to keep everything understandable.
Towards the end of the pilot episode, numerous show hints were slowly unravelled, one-by-one. Jane's situation will be made complex by a number of interesting factors that were also fleshed-out during the first episode. Watch the extended trailer below and get hooked!
