NBA Trade Rumors: Will Bynum, Likely To Be Waived By Celtics This Weekend
Boston Celtics president of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge and Mark Bartelstein, the agent for former Detroit Pistons Will Bynum, continue to work today to find a destination for the veteran point guard that might also bring the Celtics something of value in return according to Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald. "We're trying to see if there is something we can do," Bartelstein reportedly said.
Bynum was acquired Friday by Boston from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for center Joel Anthony for "cost saving" reasons rather than anything else according to NBC Sports. Boston traded Anthony's expiring $3.8 million deal for Bynum's $2.9 million deal. The $900,000 difference pushes the Celtics approximately $2.2 million below the luxury tax line, according to the Boston Globe. Boston has 16 players with guaranteed contracts for this season, in excess of the league maximum number of 15 roster spots. Bynum will likely be waived by the end of the week, more so if the Celtics can also get an asset in return for him. Ainge will have to waive a player with a guaranteed deal or make a trade to reduce before the season theOctober 29 season opening game against the Brooklyn Nets.
As of now, Bynum has neither been asked to stay away from Celtics training camp nor does he refuse to attend, according to his agent. Bartelstein said that the 31-year-old ex-Detroit point guard has already recovered from a strained hamstring that kept him out of preseason games for the Pistons prior to last week's Joel Anthony trade, and is ready to resume workouts for either the Celtics or another team. Bynum, he said, is currently working out in his hometown of Chicago. NBA sources according to the Boston Globe, said the Celtics are already content with Rajon Rondo, Marcus Smart, and Phil Pressey in their point guard lineup, leaving Bynum out of the equation.
