Spoilers for Taylor Swift's Mystery Role in The Movie "The Giver" Finally Released
"The Giver," the wildly popular Young Adult novel published in 1993 by critically-acclaimed author Lois Lowry, is set to hit theaters next month. The film's cast has long been revealed to have several big names among the cast, such as Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, and Alexander Skarsgard. However, when the movie's trailer was released, viewers had cause to to look twice; was that....Taylor Swift?
It was Taylor Swift, indeed. The country star's role in the film has finally been revealed, and fans of the novel were delighted to hear that Swift would be taking on the "small...but still crucial and important" role of Rosemary, according to the novel's author Lois Lowry. According to Lowry, Swift definitely "does not sing" during her part in the film, but the jury is still out on whether or not she will play the piano. Lowry told MTV News, "I don't know if I'm allowed to tell you that!" when questioned as to Swift's musical role in the film.
"The Giver" takes place in an eerie dystopian world that tells the story of young Jonas, who lives in a "perfect" world which lacks color and the freedom of choice. In Jonas's world, there are none of the shortcomings that exist in our world, such as illness or conflict. Every member of this society holds a specific role in the community, given to them in a coming-of-age ceremony. When Jonas is given his unique role as Receiver of Memory, he discovers the upsetting truth behind his world's seemingly-perfect veneer, and must deal with all of the beauty of the real world which has been hidden from him.
"The Giver" premieres in theaters on August 15. You can watch the trailer here.
