Apple To Replace Glass, Sapphire Betting $US700 Million To Cover Upcoming iPhone and SmartWatch Screens
Apple seems highly motivated to launch its forthcoming larger iPhone and SmartWatch with a sapphire display screens. Earlier, all the screens were covered with glass. As reported in a Wall Street Journal article, Apple believes that the new sapphire screens are more hard and can protect the screens well than anything else. The report also claims without giving any reference to the source that Apple has started with the production at a center in Mesa, Arizona.
Apple has collaborated with manufacturer GT Advanced Technologies for developing the new screen for its products. Apple is said to be making major announcements in its September 9 event about the launch of its new iPhone 6 and a likely iWatch. As per the reports, the new sapphire screens are said to be very costly when compared to the glass. It is however still unclear whether we will see the new sapphire screens in the 4.7-inch screens or 5.5-inch screens.
Rumors have claimed that both GT and Apple are investing hugely for this newest venture. It is rumored that Apple has purchased over 1.4 million sq.ft. Arizona manufacturing unit from one of a solar-panel making company for almost $113 million to make it available to GT on lease. GT is considered as one of the top sapphire manufacturing companies in the world. Apple is also said to have prepaid GT about $578 million to update the factory and technologies therein.
Though the news seems to be good if we see it from a technology point of view, it should not be costing high on the pockets of the end consumers. We expect the new iPhones or smart watches with this new sapphire screens are economical for the consumers at large.
